A Big Wellbeing Welcome to New Acupucturist Shema!
Liverpool Wellbeing is excited to announce that we have a new acupuncturist joining our team. Shema will be starting her practice at the Centre on Tuesday 4th October and as a big hello, is offering all new clients £10 off their first treatment for the month of October!

We caught up with Shema to find out a little bit more about her!

I trained as an acupuncturist because eastern medicine has always been a passion of mine, in particular, acupuncture. It was my family that started my interest as several of my family relations use it regularly. Since studying, graduating and working as an acupuncturist my enthusiasm for acupuncture continues to grow everyday.

I have been working as an acupuncturist for several years where I have treated a wide range of conditions ranging from chronic muscular pain to emotional/mental issues.
I enjoy treating all conditions and like to be challenged and have found that my particular areas of interest are women’s health issues and pain management.

My
Successes...

I would say that my most successful case was treating a ‘non-believer’. A lady approached me asking if I would be able to reduce the pain her mother was experiencing as she was suffering terribly with arthritis in both of her knees for 10 years. The condition was affecting her daily activities so badly to the extent that she couldn’t carry out her greatest passion; gardening. After one session, the client reported that she had felt no pain in both knees for a 2 week period. A couple of weeks later the client returned for a top-up maintenance treatment and then again reported to me that the pain has totally disappeared. The client has now been having monthly maintenance treatments with me for over half a year and has told all of her friends how much the sessions have made such a positive difference to her quality of life.

Why I think people choose acupuncture?

I believe that acupuncture is such a popular choice for people of different ages, sexes and ethnicities because it focuses on the whole of the human being – the physical, emotional, mental and in some cases spiritual. I have found that a lot of western medicinal practices just focus on suppressing the physical symptoms: the effect. Acupuncture focuses on treating the root of the health issue: the cause. Dealing with the cause of any medical complaint will eliminate the effects and because of this, acupuncture, to me, is the perfect solution!

What I want to do with my future...

My future business aspiration is to eventually open
my own clinic where I can treat clients and also train the acupuncturists of the future!

Cath's Fabulous Fundraiser!

When Cath Mitchell of Liverpool Wellbeing Centre goes to Sierra Leone as a volunteer teacher in two weeks, she’ll be taking with her all the donations raised from her Charity Fun Day of massage and yoga sessions which took place last weekend.

Cath organised the Centre’s masseurs and yoga teacher friends to give their time in return for donations of pens, crayons, books, paints, children’s clothes, soap and long-life light-bulbs, all of which are desperately needed by the schools out in Africa where she’ll be living and working with the EducAid charity for 10 weeks.

Among the contributors to Cath’s very successful Swap Shop Day were expert masseurs Kerry Coyne, Liliana Caldeira and Daphne Sautel of Liverpool Massage Centre, and experienced yoga teachers Helen Aldred and Cliff Bond of Liverpool Yoga Centre. Both these organisations are community enterprises.

All the exotic ingredients of the Sierra Leone themed feast cooked by Cath for the participants were donated by Matta International Foods. A colourful blend of yams, cassava, plantain, jalapeño peppers and okra, plus shrimps, herbs, peanut butter and rice all went into the pot to make mouth-watering yam and shrimp soup, groundnut stew and fried plantain with dips.

Gaynor Attreed, yoga student of the centre, was one of many who arrived bearing gifts for the African children in order to enjoy an afternoon of yoga, T’ai Chi and full body deep tissue massage. Leaving with a big smile Gaynor said, “This is such a good idea! I’d never have tried massage, but this has made me realise it’s a great way to detox and to relax after exercising. I feel brilliant now, and when it’s to help others it makes it even better, doesn’t it?”

All in all, it was a great day, enjoyed by all and it's great to know that so many people care!

African Experience!

An experience of a lifetime is just around the corner for Cath Mitchell, the splendid lady of Liverpool Wellbeing Centre as she prepares to head to Africa and join the volunteer programme run by ‘EducAid’.

EducAid* is a registered charity which works to provide free education among the underprivileged and war affected communities of Sierra Leone.
The charity has been running for more than 17 years and now funds 5 schools where 1600 young people are catered for.

Cath made the decision to volunteer 10 weeks in Sierra Leone with the EducAid project as she feels she has a lot to give and a lot to learn.

“I have heard it said that the people of Sierra Leone are some of the friendliest, most resilient, but poorest, people in the world.  Many have experienced some of the worst war terrors in modern history.  Providing young people and their communities with access to free education encourages them to feel more empowered as a country and that is exactly why I want to be part of this programme.  By passing on my knowledge and skills I hope to make a positive impact in helping towards re-addressing the current world-wide issue of social injustice.”

However, you don’t need to fly across to Sierra Leone to support EducAid you can do it right here at the Wellbeing Centre!!

YOU CAN:

Bring a little spare change for the collection box or donate via (charity link) on the website – www.liverpoolwellbeing.com  All money raised will go directly to projects in Sierra Leone

Have a clear out and donate any old football shirts or unwanted items of clothing which can be left with the reception team

Demand for school equipment always exceeds supply so how about donating a pack of pens or pencils, paper, calculators, rulers?

In whichever way you choose to help, however big or small please remember you will be making a big difference to a young person’s life in Sierra Leone.

Cath flies out to Sierra Leone on October 2nd and has promised to keep us all updated!

*EducAid provides free secondary education, covers all educational costs and provides free tuition and materials as well as extra lessons for exam classes, free lunch every day and essential medicines when necessary.
